Injuries Affect Opening Weekend

Injuries Affect Opening Weekend

With new Head Coach Desiree Zavala, the Lady Vikes Wrestling Program hoped to build off last years success and take it to another level. Zavala is no stranger to success, the four-time WIAA champion out of Grandview High School accumulated an impressive list of accolades including a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national champion, a U23 national champion, a multiple-time All-American and a senior national team member.

With a history of success steering the program, the expectations are high. Opening weekend did not go as planned for the Women's Wrestling team for a number of reasons with one being injuries. Zavala kept it short and sweet when it came to her comments regarding the weekend. "We are struggling with some injuries, and had to forfeit four weight classes. My expectation level for the girls was not met, but we will continue to work to improve. This loss was somewhat expected l, because we didn't have a full one up. It's hard to compete competitively without 10 girls weighing in."

With a clear understating of where they are at as a program and that there is work to do, they look forward to their next opportunity to showcase their progress. BBCC will be wrestling in the EOU MOUNTAINEER open as their first tournament of the year.
