Hawks Come Out On Top

BBCC faced off versus the Columbia Basin College Hawks on Wednesday September 20th at the DAC.

Going into the match BBCC understood that the Hawks would come out flying. Head Coach Alexa Moser stated "CBC is a team that is going to come out strong and come out swinging and we knew that going into the match but we were caught back on our heels." This scouting report seemed accurate as CBC came out of the gate and took set number one by a score of 25-17. BBCC was able make the necessary adjustments resulting in the Lady Vikes taking the second set by a score of 25-20. After knotting up the match at one to one, the Hawks turned it on taking the following two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20. Audrey Wellhausen had a stellar performance with 10 kills, 2 aces and 2 block assists while Emma Lucas continued to refine her game as the main facilitator dishing out 26 assists. The Lady Vikes were also bitten by the injury bug as Dakota Killian was forced out of the match with an ankle injury. Moser on the game, "We had great passing stats and defense last night but we struggled offensively. Our setter, Emma Lucas, did a great job of mixing up the offense and trying to feed our go to hitters but when we aren't putting balls away, it's tough to finish those plays. Audrey Wellhausen had a great night with double digit kills but one player can't carry your offense. Volleyball is a team sport and when you have a couple girls that are having off nights, it's hard to find a rhythm, especially offensively. Losing Dakota Killian in the third set was devastating. Her presence out on the court has been vital to our success. But the girls rallied around her and fought back. We had girls in positions they're not normally in, had to switch up line-ups but everyone stepped up and played their role, unfortunately we just didn't come out on top."

Coach Moser had this to say regarding the hard fought battle. "Although we didn't get the win I was proud of the way the girls competed. It was a fun match to watch, there was a lot of good volleyball happening. It just didn't happen consistently enough for us. Consistency is key in volleyball because it's a game of momentum and we struggled to start every set."

The Lady Vikes have no choice but to keep thier heads up and keep moving forward. A quick turnaround with a match verus Yakima on Friday is looked at as a positive in the eyes of Moser. "The nice thing about minimal time in between our region play, is you don't have time to think about your previous game, there is no time to dwell on this loss. We have to have a forward focus on what's next and that focus is on Yakima. Yakima is a tough team, they finished 3rd in our region last year, competed tough in nwacs and have consistently been in the top 10 polls this year. But the East region is having a competitive year, everyone is beating everyone and each match is anyone's game. If we focus on us, control our side of the net by limiting errors and putting the pressure on Yakima, things will start looking better for us!"
