The Big Bend Community College men's basketball team took on tough competition this past weekend at the Bigfoot Classic in Spokane, Washington. The Vikings faced three challenging opponents, showcasing moments of brilliance but ultimately finishing 1-2.
Tough Opener Against Everett
BBCC began the tournament against Everett Community College, battling through a hard-fought game. Trailing 32-25 at halftime, the Vikings relied on Gideon Harris, who scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first half, to keep them within reach.
Despite their efforts, offensive struggles persisted in the second half, resulting in a 61-53 loss. Harris led the team with 19 points and five rebounds, while Gil Gonzalez contributed 10 points and five boards.
Dominating Fraser Valley
The Vikings bounced back in their second game, taking on Fraser Valley College. BBCC found its rhythm early, shooting 43% from the field and heading into halftime with a 36-27 lead. Gil Gonzalez was unstoppable, pouring in 17 first-half points.
The Vikings maintained their momentum in the second half, scoring an impressive 52 points and routing Fraser Valley 88-57. Gonzalez finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Harris added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Close Battle Against Linn-Benton
In their final game, BBCC faced Linn-Benton Community College in a back-and-forth contest. Tied 32-32 at halftime, the Vikings shot an efficient 46% from the field but were unable to close the game in the final minutes, falling 71-65.
Gonzalez once again led the Vikings with 18 points and eight rebounds. Harris chipped in 12 points, and Marki Ibrahim contributed 11 points in the effort.
Head Coach Jason Hopkins had this to say regarding the weekend.
"We competed hard this weekend, but only came away with one victory over Fraser College. Both of our other games were 1 or two possession games in the final couple minutes, but we didn't execute the way we needed to down the stretch. Gil Gonzalez really played well over the course of the weekend scoring the ball and Gideon Harris contributed from the point guard position. Victor Raymond also had his most productive weekend so far. We had a couple of guys start to shoot the ball better, especially Marki, Cole and Ian and the offensive changes we have been making are starting to yield some fruit. We have a long way to go, but the only goal is to be the best team we can be when conference plays on January 8th and we are making strides in that direction."
Looking Ahead
The Vikings now turn their attention to the Peninsula Crossover Tournament this coming weekend, where they will face another three-game set. Follow Viking athletics for updates as BBCC looks to build on their performances and continue growing as a team!
