Vikes Take Down Undefeated Tacoma to Wrap Up PreSeason

With conference play beginning on Wednesday, the Vikes were looking for a final tune up this past weekend as they took on Pierce Community College on Saturday along with the nationally ranked and undefeated Tacoma Community College on Sunday.

With conference play right around the corner along with being struck by the injury bug the Vikes had to navigate carefully throughout the weekend. Hunter Gibson was handed the ball for game one an threw two shut out innings in preparation for his Wednesday start, followed by Tim Williams who also threw two innings while giving up two runs for a final touch up prior to his start on Wednesday. Pitching on both sides kept the opposing offense in check as the game was tied at two a piece going into the bottom of the 9th where Pierce was able to walk it off on a two out single up the middle off of Heath Hachkowski resulting in a 3-2 loss.

Brett Nemecheck got the start in game two and threw three innings of one run baseball while striking out two and not walking a batter before handing it off to the bullpen who held Pierce in check. Three Viking errors defensivly proved to the difference as the Vikes fell by a score of 6-2 with Parker Plato, Dalton Miller and Kyler Nilson all collecting two hits in the loss.

The Vikes then traveled to Tacoma to take on the 18-0 Tacoma Titans. Hayden Schooler was the starter for game one and threw 5 innings of 5 hit baseball while giving up three earned runs and striking out five followed by Grant Orme tossing three innings of one run ball. Once again errors proved costly as the Vikes fell by a score of 5-2 dropping thier third of the weekend.

The fourth and final game of the weekend was the Vikings chance to gain some momentum going into conference play as they handed the ball to Austin McQuilliams for his first collegiate start. McQuilliams threw four innings of 2 run baseball and held the Titans in check. A 3-0 Tacoma lead lasted until the final two innings of the 7 inning game where the Vikes were able to scratch across two runs in the 6th and pop off for five runs in the 7th giving the Vikes a 7-3 lead before handing the ball of to their closer Zack Geertsen who threw a 1, 2, 3 bottom half handing Tacoma their first loss of the season.
