Vikings Split Opening Weekend

BBCC Baseball opened up this past weekend to kick off the 2022 season as they hosted Wenatchee Valley for a four game set.

Dylan Gardner got the call as the opening day starter for the Vikes and did not disappoint going 7 innings while giving up 2 earned runs, striking out 12 and not walking a batter. Parker Plato, Dalton Miller and Gabe Passey each collected 2 hits on the day but 4 errors was the difference resulting in a 5-4 loss in game one of the season.

The Vikes hoped to respond in game two and did just that. Devyn Hernandez threw 5 innings giving up 6 runs while striking out 4 followed by Jonas Plew tossing 2 scoreless innings and striking out 5. The Viking offense exploded for 20 runs led by reigning NWAC Player of th Year Austin Bunn going 4-4 with 7 RBI's and collecting his first home run of the season. Parker Plato continued his hot streak at the plate going 4-4 adding to his hit total on opening day. Brandham Ponce and Gabe Passey chipped in with two hits and combined for 5 RBI's with Ponce launching his first home run of the season taking the Vikings to their first win of the season.

Sunday came around and the Vikings fell in a hole in the first inning giving up 7 runs but responded with a 9 spot in the bottom half but the offense could not catch fire for the remainder of the game while Wenatchee kept the sticks hot. Austin Bunn collected 2 hits and 2 RBI's, Brandham Ponce gathered 2 hits and 3 RBI's and one of the Vikes hottest hitters in Gabe Passey collected yet another 2 hits in game 3 while adding 2 RBI's. Although the offense managed 10 runs the Vikings pitching could not stop the Wenatchee offense and fell by a score of 17-10.

Zakaia Michaels was handed the ball on the final game of the weekend looking to even up the series. Michaels went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 5 leading the Vikes to a 13-7 victory. Austin Bunn chipped in with 3 hits and an RBI, Parker Plato collected his first round tripper of the season and collected 2 RBI's as well as Gabe Passey doing it again and smashing his 7th and 8th hit of the weekend having four 2 hit games in a row.
