Lady Vikings Secure 1 Seed in Eastern Region Standings
Currently riding a six-game winning streak, Big Bend Community College looked to make it seven in a row as they hosted a top seed in the Eastern Region, Treasure Valley Community College.
The first quarter favored TVCC as they shot 44% from the field and an impressive 60% from beyond the arc, giving them a 19-16 lead after the opening frame. BBCC responded in the second quarter, tightening up defensively and holding Treasure Valley to 40% shooting while converting 47% of their own shots. This effort allowed the Vikings to take a slim 40-39 lead into halftime.
The momentum carried into the third quarter as BBCC outscored TVCC 23-20, shooting a solid 53% from the field and 50% from three-point range, extending their lead to four points. The fourth quarter saw the Vikings take full control, outscoring the Chukars 21-14 and ultimately securing an 84-73 victory.
BBCC put on a balanced scoring effort, with six Lady Vikings recording double-digit points. Oaklie Jackman delivered another dominant performance with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Riley Layton added 13 points and 12 rebounds, each securing yet another double-double.
Head Coach Preston Wilks praised his team's effort, stating:
"We were hoping that we could avenge our loss down at their place. The ladies were really hyped to go out and play hard. I made a promise to them prior to the game that if they would out-rebound Treasure by 10+ boards, we'd win this game. I was thrilled to see how we hit the boards tonight—we were relentless. Riley and OJ each had 10+ boards; they really came through for us tonight.
We knew they'd try to make a run in the fourth quarter, like they did down at their place back in January. This time, we showed poise, took care of the ball, and hit enough of our free throws to seal the win. We celebrated in the locker room—we were excited to beat them this time around on our home floor. And we celebrated that we have now pulled into sole possession of the #1 seed. But for me, the biggest joy comes from knowing that we are getting better at the right time of the season. The big key now is we have to stay humble and hungry and get to work on improving even more."
Up next, the Lady Vikings will hit the road to Columbia Basin College to face off against the CBC Hawks on Wednesday, February 12th.
