The Big Bend Community College softball team has been honored by Easton and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) after being recognized with the 7th-highest-grade point average (GPA) in the country for the 2018-19 academic year. The Vikings combined GPA totaled 3.565. Last season (2017-18) the Vikings recorded the 18th-highest average. The highest average was from the College of the Sequoias who maintained a 3.760.
Individually, Chance Barg, Aubree Barney, Hunter Duke, Taryn Mathews, Riley Newbold, Megan Porter, Alyssa Ray, and Maya Saneishi were also honored as Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes. In order to be recognized, these student-athletes had to maintain a 3.5 GPA or above for the year.
"We are very proud of these student-athletes and their successes both academically and athletically," said Big Bend Community College President Terry Leas. "We are also proud of our athletic department and coaches for recognizing and emphasizing the importance of being successful in both areas."
Big Bend was the only softball team in the Northwest Athletic Conference that was recognized as a team.
"These student-athletes are an outstanding example of exactly what we are trying to do here at Big Bend as an athletic department," said Athletic Director Mark Poth. "Our coaches work hard to recruit quality athletes, but also athletes with good character that will represent Big Bend well. Congratulations to Coach (Michael) Garoutte and our softball team on this well-deserved honor. We are very proud of them."
