BIG BEND 80, YAKIMA 79
The Runnin' Vikes held on to win a nailbiter on Saturday evening at home over Yakima Valley. Big Bend led by 9 points at halftime and held a 10-point lead with 1:40 left in the game. The Yaks (8-15, 5-7) tried to make a comeback, but the blue and green were able to hold on and snap a three-game losing streak.
BBCC (9-17, 3-9) got a big night offensively from Kaeler Kahana who scored 24 points (3 assists, 2 steals) with Landon Harrington adding 15 points and 7 boards. Payton Nielsen and Jahvontae' Jones each just missed notching double-doubles in the scorebook. Both finished with 9 points with Jones adding 12 rebounds and Nielsen finishing with 11. Jonathan Thomas chipped in another solid effort off the bench tallying 11 points and 4 boards.
The Runnin' Vikes dominated the glass in the win outrebounding Yakima 41-23.
YAKIMA 77, BIG BEND 70
The Lady Vikes had their win streak increase to three games Saturday in a tough outing against one of the East Region's top teams. Big Bend never trailed by more than 12 points during the game and even took the lead by a point with 7:21 left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Vikes cut the lead again to a single point (71-70) with 1:42 left in the game but were unable to put together the needed late run to get the win.
Big Bend (11-14, 3-9) had four starters finish in double figures offensively led by Anna Yarbro who turned in one of her best performances of the season finishing with 21 points, 19 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kaitlyn Callahan added 16 points (3 steals) while Savana Stephenson turned in a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block). Maelyn Mace also filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.
The blue and green took the loss despite outrebounding Yakima (19-6, 9-3) 40-23.
Both teams will have a little time off before they return to action on Saturday (Feb. 15) on the road at Treasure Valley. The Lady Vikes are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m., with the Runnin' Vikes to follow. The games will be streaming live on the NWAC Sports Network at www.nwacsportsnetwork.com/tvcc.
