Vikings Split Series Week, Eye Playoff Push in Season Finale

MOSES LAKE, WA — After a hard-fought series split on the road at Yakima Valley College, Big Bend Community College's baseball team returned home determined to win the weekend. The Vikings delivered, taking both games in dramatic fashion before hitting the road again, where they fell flat in a tough doubleheader loss to Spokane Falls. Now sitting at 10-10 in conference play, BBCC gears up for a crucial home stand with playoff implications on the line.

Home Sweep: Comeback and Command

In Game 1 against Yakima Valley, Brendan McKinley got the start and turned in a solid outing, going six innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out three. The bullpen duo of Talan Wright and Garrison Garton took it from there, combining for six shutout innings and giving the Vikings a chance to win in extras.

Trailing 3-0 early, BBCC clawed back to tie the game at 4-4 by the end of the ninth. In the bottom of the 12th, Roman Basurto delivered the knockout blow, launching a walk-off three-run home run to lift the Vikings to a thrilling 7-4 victory. Basurto had a standout game, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Rory Swanson and Camron Fleck also contributed with two hits apiece.

Game 2 saw the Vikings carry that momentum with an offensive explosion. Despite giving up two early runs, starter Cole McKinnon settled in, and the bats came alive. BBCC scored 12 unanswered runs to secure a mercy-rule win in eight innings, 12-2. Oak Held led the charge, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Basurto and Rylan Osbjornsen each added two hits. On the mound, Owen Relkoff and Jacob Kanaly combined for six scoreless innings in relief.

Road Woes at Spokane Falls

The Vikings looked to carry their momentum into a midweek matchup at Spokane Falls on April 30 but ran into trouble, dropping both games of the doubleheader.

In Game 1, Garin Gurtler struggled with command, surrendering six earned runs over four innings with a season-high four walks. Despite a strong relief effort from Brady Sprague—who threw four shutout innings—the Vikings couldn't complete a comeback and fell 7-4. Osbjornsen continued his hot streak, collecting three hits, while Held and Blaine Macdonald added two each.

Game 2 saw similar struggles. McKinnon allowed four earned runs over 3 1/3 innings before the bullpen faltered. The offense never found its rhythm, managing just four hits in a 9-2 loss. Osbjornsen provided the lone highlight with a solo home run.

Final Push for Playoffs

At 10-12 in conference play, the Vikings now turn their attention to their final six regular-season games, hosting Spokane Falls in a pivotal doubleheader on Saturday. With playoff hopes hanging in the balance, BBCC will need to take both games at home to keep their postseason dreams alive.
