Trojan Defense Clamps Down, & Offense Scores 38 in the Paint

Everett, WA – The Trojans were back in action Saturday afternoon, off the heels of a defensive battle the night before against Spokane, a game in which EvCC won 48-41.  Everett took on Big Bend CC who lost in an overtime thriller against Whatcom the night before.

While Everett only put up 8 points in the first quarter yesterday, today had a very different feel as EvCC put up 17 first quarter points and again displayed quality defense holding the hot shooting Vikings to 8 first quarter points.  By the halftime whistle Everett had put up 20 more and held a commanding 37-19 lead.  Mikail Montez led the team with 12 points, while Maddy Thoma had 10.

Big Bend made a couple of runs in the second half, but never got closer than 14 points and the Trojans cruised to their largest win of the season 68-48.  Mikail Montez scored a career high 26 points and Maddy Thoma continued to have a solid night finishing with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and led the team with 5 assists.  Once again EvCC played a solid defensive game, holding Big Bend to just 21.3% shooting from the floor, while having their best offensive shooting game of the season going 46.2% from the floor and scoring a monstrous 38 points in the paint compared to Big Bend's 12.  The Trojans also shared the ball with 23 assists (also a season high) and forced 19 turnovers.

Everett will take on Clackamas CC out of Oregon City, OR tomorrow at 4pm.  The Cougars have had an easy time of it over the first two days of the weekend, defeating Skagit Valley 88-50 and then defeated Whatcom earlier today 96-72.  But the Trojans have had one of the better defenses in the NWAC this season holding opponents to just 26.7% shooting from the floor which currently ranks second best in the NWAC.
