Lady Vikings Roll In Fourth Quarter

A game that seemed to be anyone's game through three quarters of play quickly swung Big Bend Community College's way, as the Lady Vikings basketball team outscored the homestanding Treasure Valley Community College Lady Chukars 19-7 in the fourth quarter Saturday (February 11) to claim a crucial 65-52 win in NWAC East play.

Through the first 30 minutes of the contest, neither team could take control of the game, as the margin was no more than four points for either throughout. However, in the final period, the Lady Vikings would find themselves with their largest lead of the game at 56-50, with just over six minutes to play. It was a lead they would refuse to relinquish, holding the Lady Chukars scoreless over the next five plus minutes, until the Lady Chukars converted on two free-throws with 14 seconds remaining, to set the final margin.

For the Lady Vikings, sophomore Callie Tolman had 19 points, as she went 5-10 from three-point range. Sophomore Ambra Hacker was the only other Lady Viking in double figures, finishing with 17. Freshman Macy Hellstern led the rebounding efforts with a game-high ten boards. For the Lady Chukars, Valerie Vorwaller notched 16 points in the loss.

Winners of five of their last six games, the Lady Vikings (14-10 overall, 8-4 NWAC East) currently sit in third place, one game behind second-place Walla Walla Community College, and a game and a half back of Columbia Basin College (16-5 overall, 9-3 NWAC East), whom the Lady Vikings will face at home in their next contest (February 15). In their first matchup back on January 18th, Columbia Basin defeated the Lady Vikings 73-63. Wednesday's game is scheduled to tip at 5:30pm, with the men's game to follow.
