The Runnin' Vikes improved to 5-1 on the young season picking up two more wins at the bigfoot classic in Spokane over the weekend. Big Bend handled the Gonzaga Club in its opener Friday, 104-59 before picking up its first loss of the season Saturday to Lower Columbia, 104-90. They bounced back on Sunday for a win over Salish Kootenai, 130-72, and will now finally get enjoy playing in front of the home crowd at the Peter DeVries Center this weekend.
During their road stretch to kick off the season, the Vikings are averaging 95.4 pts per game and are shooting 50.3 percent as a team from the field (37.2 percent from behind the arc). They are also shooting 72.7 percent from the free throw line.
Over the weekend, Big Bend was led by sophomore guard Kobe Huerta who scored 74 points during the three-game stretch that included a double-double (27 points, 11 boards) in BBCC's win over Salish Kootenai. The Vikings also got a pair of double-double performances in their win over the Gonzaga Club from sophomore Joey Andrews (15 points and 10 rebounds) and sophomore Seraphin Decker (13 points, 10 rebs, 5 assists). Andrews would finish the weekend with 47 points and 25 rebounds total while Decker dropped 53 points and finished with 12 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Miles Brown also enjoyed a successful weekend wiping the glass for 24 boards and finishing with 53 total points.
You can get your first glimpse of the Runnin' Vikes at home this weekend when they play host to Grays Harbor Friday night (tip-off at 7 p.m.) and again on Saturday when they welcome Fairchild Air Force Base to the Big Bend campus for a 4 p.m. start.
